Most comparisons of Shopify and WooCommerce are written for stores in the US or Europe. In Indonesia, a few local details change the answer, mainly around payments and shipping.
We build stores on both. Here’s how we help clients choose.
The short answer
- Choose Shopify if you want to launch quickly, don’t want to think about hosting or security, and have a modest catalogue.
- Choose WooCommerce if you sell mainly to Indonesian customers, want local payments and couriers built in, and are happy to have someone look after the site.
Both are good. The wrong choice is usually the one made for the wrong reasons, like “my cousin uses it”.
Payments: the biggest difference in Indonesia
Shopify has its own payment system, Shopify Payments, but it isn’t available in Indonesia. Indonesian stores use a third-party gateway such as Midtrans or Xendit instead, which supports the things Indonesian customers expect: bank transfer, virtual accounts, QRIS and e-wallets like GoPay, OVO and DANA.
That works well, but Shopify charges an extra transaction fee on orders paid through a third-party gateway, on top of the gateway’s own fee. How much depends on your Shopify plan. On a small store it’s minor. On a busy one it adds up, so do the sum with your real numbers.
WooCommerce has no platform transaction fee. You pay the gateway’s fee and your hosting, and that’s it.
Shipping to Indonesian addresses
If you ship within Indonesia, you want live rates from couriers like JNE, J&T and SiCepat at checkout, so customers see the real cost before they pay.
WooCommerce has well-established plugins that do this. On Shopify it’s possible through third-party apps, some of which charge a monthly fee. Neither is a deal-breaker, but test the checkout with a real Indonesian address before you choose.
What it really costs
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Monthly subscription | Free software |
| Hosting | Included | You pay for hosting |
| Payment fees | Gateway fee plus Shopify’s third-party fee | Gateway fee only |
| Themes | Free and paid themes | Free and paid themes |
| Apps and plugins | Many are monthly subscriptions | Many are one-off or yearly |
| Upkeep | Mostly handled by Shopify | Updates, backups and security are on you or your developer |
Shopify’s costs are higher but predictable. WooCommerce is cheaper to run, but only if someone keeps it updated. An unmaintained WooCommerce store is slow and, eventually, unsafe.
Ease of use
Shopify is easier for most store owners. Adding products, managing orders and checking sales all happen in one clean dashboard, and the mobile app is good.
WooCommerce runs on WordPress. It’s flexible, but it has more moving parts, and the dashboard gets busier with every plugin. If you’re not technical, plan to have a developer on call.
SEO and content
Both can rank well on Google. WooCommerce gives you more control over URLs and content, and WordPress is excellent for blogging. Shopify covers the basics well and is fast out of the box, but its URL structure is fixed.
Honestly, the platform matters less than the work: good product descriptions, real photos, a fast site and a few useful articles.
Selling abroad as well?
If you sell to customers in Australia, Singapore or Europe as well as Indonesia, Shopify’s international features, such as multiple currencies and international shipping apps, are easy to set up. WooCommerce can do the same, but it needs more plugins and more setup.
Our recommendation
- A new brand testing the market, small catalogue, wants to launch this month: Shopify.
- An established Indonesian business with mostly local customers, local payments and many orders: WooCommerce, with a care plan.
- Already on one and it works: stay. Migrating costs time and money, and can cost you search rankings if it’s done carelessly.
We set up Shopify stores from IDR 5,999K and build or migrate WooCommerce stores on a fixed quote. If you’re unsure which one fits, tell us what you sell and who buys it at hello@avaiacreative.id, and we’ll give you a straight answer.
